Sophia Bahamonde - Topic Presentation 1000 Words
For this project, each presentation had a selected topic
that would be found controversial, or that needs to be talked about. I feel as
though all groups did an exceptional job in providing insightful information
and showed how serious these topics are.
This time, Group 3 started first. I am a part of Group 3 and
have definitely seen some improvements since the last presentation but also noticed
things that I feel we could work on. Our
topic was on Climate Change, a personal favorite subject of mine. We split the
research into five sun-topics; what is climate change, what causes it, how it
effects, technology around it, and solutions to resolve climate change as well
as organizations that step up to reduce it. Overall, our research met our
expectations. Everyone did an adequate job in organizing their material,
including using educational videos that went along with their information. The
research gave detailed evidence on climate change and its different aspects. Each
member also did a great job in presenting their parts. Although we didn’t get a
chance to rehearse like I wanted to, the presentation went much smoother than
last time. While our project went along very well, I did notice some flaws. One
main issue was the length of our presentation. Our whole project took up two
class times. I would have to say that this mainly has to do with the number of
videos we had. If this were to be a presentation at a conference or any other
professional setting, I feel that it would have been overboard. On top of that,
there feels as if there hasn’t been much of group members involved. Only a few members would actively ask questions
or at least respond to questions the group leader had. Just doing your part of
what you’re assigned to do is just a building block, not the entire thing. Some
things felt like it had fallen onto one person despite these different factors
being offered to others. When it comes to group assignments, it takes a lot of
effort and teamwork from everyone. Like last time, most members just agreed on
what was being said by lead members of the group and not voicing their
opinions. I like to ensure that everyone is satisfied and comfortable with the
project.
The next presentation was from Group 2. Their topic was focused on Gender Inequality, a truly controversial issue that can be seen on a global scale. Group’s 2 presentation was excellent, and you can tell they worked very well together since it was very cohesive. They also did exceptional research which brought out the truth behind gender inequality. That it doesn’t just affect gender, but also race, sexuality, and sexual orientation can be a cause for discrimination. One of my favorite aspects of their presentation was that they incorporated case studies as factual evidence of. For example, the first case study they presented was about a police officer who harassed a transgender woman. They made sure to input that discrimination can occur anywhere and it’s a horrible thing to let happen, especially from those that are placed in positions to serve and protect their citizens. Group 2 did a great job in implementing graphs as well as other visuals that would be appealing to the audience. Discussing how the LGTBQ community is affected, what wage gaps and education gaps are, and even sexual harassment in the workplace. The only shortcoming of their presentation in my opinion was their part in racism. I believe they did an outstanding job in going in depth about what racism is and how it effects people, but it did feel like they strayed from the main subject. They didn’t go as in depth about how racism affects gender inequality especially women on color. I would have liked to see more information such as how women of color will get paid less than a white woman or how they are already judged and stereotyped not only because of their gender, but their skin color or ethical background as well. Another thing they could have done was put solutions or what is being done to help bring equality to people. Overall, they did an amazing job in providing insight of this situation and used a lot of creativity for it.
Lastly was Group 1 whose topic was on Infrastructure. To
start off, their overall presentation was very well organized and consistent
throughout the entire project. Like Group 2, they were very well unified and
worked good together. They used adequate research to explain why infrastructure
is quite an issue. I didn’t know much about this situation until viewing this
presentation. I also appreciated that they didn’t rely heavily on videos to
talk about their research. I believe they actually went and did research and
incorporated it into their project which is much better because they know what
they’re talking about. They made sure to incorporate bills that are being
passed and funds that are being used to build. In addition, they input the use
of technology as well and how it’s tied with infrastructure, such as
improvements, costs, and developments. They also included the importance of transportation,
not just highways that are used by individuals, but also the amtrack or
railroads and even bridges. They ensured the audience would learn something new
and open their eyes to how everything is made. In my opinion, it showed me that
a lot of things goes on in the background that people tend to use every day
without know how it works. They also made sure to question these bills of
infrastructure and what are some issues and benefits of it. The only thing that
I think they could have added would be maybe how infrastructure affects the
environment and small communities. For instance, there has been many times throughout
history when people would be kicked out of their homes in order to build buildings.
There is more to infrastructure than money and budgeting. Livelihoods and much
more can easily be affected.
Excellent post! Great writing and thoughtfulness about the topics.
