Sherley Tobar — Topic presentation Blog
All of the presentations that were presented were very touching and eye opening. I am certain that not only to me but to everyone, because the use of visuals really made these topics just as important as they are or should be. Every topic of these presentations are topics which we see in today's society and in our day to day life. Starting off with group number 3. They presented climate change. Climate change has been a topic that has been talked about for many years but despite this, climate change needs a lot of government, communities, and individual support and help from everyone around the world. Climate change is a worldwide problem. The group was discussing the reasons for climate change and the main reasons for climate change are fashion industries, giant corporations, food industries, and pollution from factories and vehicles. There are many more reasons for climate change, but the bottom line is that it seems like we are not doing anything about it. This group presentation gave us tips and recommendations on what to do to help climate change. They gave suggestions like, for instance, to use reusable bags, throw trash in the corresponding bin and manner, by using the three R’s. Reuse, reduce, recycle. They also point out how small changes can make a big impact. Talking to someone about climate change can make a big difference because awareness is being created. When we are home it's best to turn off all the appliances and disconnect them from the outlets because that way we save energy. Also, using more clothes when we are cold can save energy by not using the heater in the house. This group really went in depth with showing how climate change has affected wildlife. This group used a lot of videos and visual images that caught the attention of the audience and therefore gained sensitivity and attention from the audience. I have personally learned a lot from this presentation and now will be more careful of what I buy, consume and wear to help reduce climate change. It is important to note that climate change is not a problem that an individual can solve by themselves but indeed it is a team effort.communities and countries can take part to conquer climate change. Group 2 did their presentation on gender equality. This group talked about Sexual Harassment, Immigrants, sex difference in education, difference in pay rates based on gender and racism. All of these topics are part of gender equality, and this group did an excellent job of talking about each of these different circumstances. This group showed charts to show how girls might be better than boys in some school subjects and vice versa. The presentation showed us how gender equality plays out in the real world by showing how Russians have been harassed and bullied by people because they are gay. Also They talked about how immigrants face many challenges when they get to this country, sometimes just because they are immigrants they are looked down upon and often are devalued. I enjoy how they explain why immigrants play a big role in society and they go over the reasons why immigrants come to the United States. They also talked about racism and how different movements change the world by touching people's hearts through powerful movements like the George Floyd movement. In today's society we can see an improvement in racism because, like everything in this world, it's not perfect, but its progress. They used powerful videos to portray the emotions people felt when these meaningful movements were happening all over the world. Gender equality is very important, but the reality is that more than often we see no equality in the work environment and in school education. This group went over how to know when you're being harassed in a work environment and to know when you're being treated equally. I believe it is very important because nowadays not a lot of young ladies and young men know what are some forms of harassment and what to do when we are in a situation of this sort. Group 1 went over infrastructure and went over the infrastructure bill budget distribution. They explain how the budget cut-down works and what it will be used for. They talked about how around 360 billion of the money will be used to fund new projects for construction. Construction is important because it contributes greatly to economic growth and also provides jobs. This is important because it provides both funds and a new life into the community. Technology is also within this distribution and 130 billion will be given to fund many technological advances throughout the country. The technology bill includes improving and expanding the nation's broadband service and introducing a nationwide network of plug-in electric vehicle charges because electric cars are in higher demand each year. The money will also be used towards cyber security. Lastly, they went over transportation and around 117 billion will be given to fund transportation across the country. This group also talked about highway funding and how transportation is important to the community and who benefits from public transportation and rail infrastructure. They stated how low class families used public transportation to get to places but during the pandemic they experienced an overall decrease in public transportation; therefore, spending billions in public transportation is not wise. Advocates argue that public transit needs the money it gets and the funds because it not only provides transportation to low income families but also tackles climate change and shapes the nation's environmental footprint. I liked how these operations tied into the presentation of climate change. It is a fact that public transportation is a step up then individually owned vehicles because multiple cars cause more pollution. I believe that every group did an amazing job in explaining these real world problems, and I'm certain that it raises awareness. I'm for sure implementing things to reduce climate change and also I'm more knowledgeable about topics like gender equality and infrastructure because they play a big role all over the world.
