1,000 Word Group Project Essay
Hello my name is Ruth Canizales and today I'll be talking about what presentation stuck out the most for me and why. In speech class as my classmates in their groupds were presenting throughout the week, a group in particular really caught my attention. It was Group 1 that was teaching Chapter 3. Chapter 3 spoke about culture and communication. In this presentation the students spoke about the importance of one's culture, race, sex, disabilities and orientation. These are things that the world has and still currently struggles on.
Something that is very important in a workplace is race. Sadly we live in a world's society where racism is normalized and people have seem to lose their sense in what is and is not disrespect. It is important to see race but also not be ignorant, what I mean by this its that when you work with minorities you won't face the same struggles they do when it comes to workplace discrimination. We don't live in a world where there is segregation but minorities (black, asian, hispanic, indian) can still deal with racial slurs and racially motivated decisions made by their superiors and coworkers which can sometimes be disrespectful for them. It is important to not call them out about their stereotypes or make racist jokes in the workplace where it can easily offend people and create a toxic work enviroment for everyone.
Another thing group 1 spoke about in their presentation was sexual orientation. It is the year 2021 where gay marraiges are now legal and its now legal to surgically change your genitals and change your gender. But sadly, in this world there can be as we call "homophobic" (people who do not agree with gay or transgender rights) that do not tolerate that behavior. A lot of people have their religion and culture that quite don't tolerate the LGBTQ community but it is always impoartant that those people in the workplace respect their peers the way they'd want their religion, culture and opinions to be respected. I like how my classmates talked about how it is important to respect one another no matter what, no matter what race, opinion and sexual orientation. It is also important to respect on and anothers preffered pronouns and how they'd like to be known for. It is all about keeping a peaceful work environment and everyone feeling valued and respected.
I think religion was another important topic that group 1 spoke about. Along with sexual orientation and race, religious groups can also face discrimination. A big religion that faces discrimination in todays society would be Muslims that believe in Islam. They face a lot of discrimination due to political terrorist attacks made by extremists in their religious group, but something you should remember is that there are always good muslims that don't support the actions of others. But along with muslims, every other religiom in the world deserves respect and should not tolerate any disrespect from others. It is also important for you to remember that many people won't believe in the same things you believe and that to be aware that your religion isn't the only one to exist and to not have the "my religion is the right one" type mindset. Its important for employers to create a safe workplace environment for everyone.
With race, sexual orientation, and religion it gives you access to see how far your privilege can take you because sometimes the white race can have severeal advantages than how far a minor can go. As years and decades go by the generations change to when it comes with being more accepting to others. Just remember if you see something that you don't like or feel comftorable, remind yourself are you being rude in any way? Or invalidating their thoughts and views? Please always remember that not everyone thinks alike.
In the same category of minorities we have people who have disabilities. This is also another topic that group 1 spoke about that is really important for others to know when working. It is important to disclose to your boss or employer about any physical and mental disabities you might have. Once you disclose these they'll make sure they put you on the right spot and make sure you have a comftorable working environment to make sure you're not overwhelmed or uncomftorable with your surroundings. It is also very important to tell your coworkers about your disabilities or health deffects, that way they are aware of your situation and if anything were to happen to you they can always know how to solve a problem.
In this world a big battle that America still faces although its been going on for ages is sexism. A lot of times men still remain misogynistic in todays world and try to bring down women. For example, still to this day women get paid less than men do even if they are in the same job and it is something really sad. In the world whatever our sex is it is what we're determined to do. Women are the ones who are supposed to raise kids, they're the ones who cook and clean, women should not be doing the hard work. Men are the ones who go to work and support the family financially, they should be the ones who pay the bills and for everything. Since the world has evolved and society has changed it is all very different now men and women can vote, go to way and basically do the same thing whatever they want. Its important to respect both genders and to remember that they're both equal and no gender is superior to the other.
In Conclusion to my essay, I was really touched by what group one spoke about. They not only spoke about treating individuals in a workplace with respect and how to keep a peaceful work environment, they also spoke about real world problems that still exist to this day and I believe that it is very important to educate people about these problems and how we can stop it.
Nice blog! I so agree that this course should teach and show us how to handle societal issues!
