Aidamary Pulido SPC1017-2217-5770 1000 Word Essay Group Presentation Chapters 3,9,10

Hi my name is Aidamary Pulido, and I will be talking about the group presentations. All the presentations stuck out to me in their own way. Chapter 3 was about culture and communication. This chapters presentation was very important because there are currently many issues going on in today's society when is comes to race, culture, and sex. Chapter 9 was communicating in groups. Group communication is very important in our everyday life. Chapter 10 was about Group Leadership and Problem Solving, this chapter was all about giving group presentations and the role everyone in your group plays.

I really enjoyed how every presentation was interactive with images and video. They weren’t just information and the students read off the powerpoint. I truly feel doing the presentations in this way allowed everyone to truly gather more information and truly know and understand everything that was being taught throughout the chapter. The chapter that stuck out to me the most was Chapter 3 Culture and Communication. This chapter specifically stood out to me because problems about race, sex and culture are still going on in todays society. Personally to me that is extremely shocking because you’d think that with how advanced we are and how far we’ve come people would learn to be more accepting of others.

Racial discrimination is a very big issue that we see still going on every single day. Racial discrimination is a very big issue and sometimes even ignored in the work place. You would truly be surprised how many people get discriminated against in their workplace by their superiors or even other workers and how it gets brushed away as if nothing ever happened. Race is not the only cause of discrimination. Culture is also a big cause. Many cultures have their specific way of dressing or things they can and cannot eat. For example the muslim culture women are required to wear what is called a Hijab. There are many cases where others that are not a part of the muslim religion that will see a muslim in their Hijab and immediately associate them with terroist or be scared of them or assume they have bad intentions and will fear them. This is discrimantion.

Another example of discrimination that is constantly going on and this one is resulting with even violance is people that are against heterosexuals. In Chapter 3 sections 2d it was presented about how people born before our generation see anything other than heterosexual which is being attracted to the oppsotie sex as not normal. The LGBTQ has had to constantly face many acts of discrimination because many do not accpet them. Violent acts have been done to the community for example the club shooting that happened in Orlando at a gay club. Not only are they discriminated against in clubs or social outings but it is very difficult for them to find jobs. Most cases will result in them having to hide who they really are in order to be “accepted” at their job or even be considered for the position.

Chapter 9 was about group communication. Group communications are in our daily life. Speaking to our family involved group communication. In the presentation a video about a family talking at the dinner table was shown. We usually think we know how to communicate. We do it everyday but a lot of times we don’t. Sometimes we say certain things that sort of just kill a conversation or are just aren't considered to start a conversation. Oftentimes I find myself trying to say something but the wrong thing gets understood. This often happens during an argument. This happens from lack of communication skills. I also find myself getting very nervous and stuttering when speaking in front of groups or when I have even if it's my family just looking at me while I am saying something. Practicing on how to communicate in groups is very important to not feel this way. Also, it will allow conversations to go more smoothly and for you to be better understood over all.

Chapter 10 Presentation was about Group leadership and Problem Solving. This presentation was very important because group presentations are something we will most likely need to be comfortable with not only as students but also eventually in work. As a student at some point you will have to be put in a group to give presentations and it is very important to know the effective ways to give the presentation for it to go smoothly. Also, in your workplace you will most likely need to give group presentations in meetings for example even if you're the owner of a business you need to know how to effectively get your topic across to your audience and truly keep them engaged. Most of the time just speaking isn’t as effective as when you plan your visual presentation with speaking points that will keep your audience paying attention. Knowing how to solve problems on the spot is crucial in every day scenarios especially in the workplace. Being organized during a presentation is very important.

I believe all presentations were great and they all got their point across effectively.I personally agree with everything they said in every slide. Every topic discussed are topics that are useful to every student in the class no matter what you are studying. I truly believe that the way the professor has us present our chapters is a great way for us to really learn. Not only does it catch and interest students more but when we have to do the research for our slides and our sections it is not just us reading off the book and just typing what we read. We actually have to go and do our research and watch videos to find the perfect one and look for visuals and read on the topic and truly understand it in order to give a good presentation. I have never had a class so interactive like this class and I truly believe it has been the most effective in my learning process.
